The Sleeping Giant: Posters and
the Chinese Economy
Poster House

Our immediate vision for Poster House’s main exhibition space was to bring one bold and imposing gesture to the gallery, (befitting the term “Sleeping Giant”). The digital LED sign related to commerce both small (food shops and carts) and large (stock market tickers) and was a striking way to convey the title and information about the show. We sourced the manufacturer and designed the sign’s five-minute display loop, making deliberate use of its commercial aesthetic.

The typographical identity referenced the pixelated quality of LED lights. As a historical design note we researched traditional Chinese design and chose a floral pattern. This was intentionally given an overscaled dot-screen and used as a mural in a nod to the printed posters in the show.

Three brochures and two posters rounded out our design work on this show.
